A fully engulfed large hay barn on fire near the intersection of Champoeg Road and Hwy 219 north of St. Paul this morning triggered a swift and heavy response from multiple fire departments. Firefighters from St. Paul arrived first on scene, and called for assistance from Aurora, Woodburn, Newberg-Dundee, and Tualatin Valley fire departments. Smoke from the fire was visible for several miles around.
Over an hour was required to bring the fire under control, and Champoeg Road traffic is being diverted to McKay Road. ODOT and Marion County have detours in place, and traffic between St. Paul and Newberg is slow and congested. Firefighters are expected to be on scene for some time mopping up.
